A quick break from our
Refurb Roundup Day reports of the March 25th fan presentation now, for a bumper load of new
World of Disney construction photos. The concrete walls of the resort’s future flagship store have grown incredibly fast since
our last look just a couple of weeks ago. Now surrounding the site on every side, many appear to have reached their full height. You can see window openings and even the first doorway. The general curved shape of the building and its main entrance has begun to take shape, really making
the concept art much easier to imagine in reality.
Here we go on our journey
Around the World in 32 all-new photos!
We begin at the arrival from the resort’s bus station, where the huge bulk of concrete walls immediately come into view ahead as guests walk toward the hub and on to the parks. For all too long we’ve known nothing more than a few trees and an empty void here. The headline above is “The World in 360 degrees” and that describes the design of the store well, how it sits jutting out from this corner of Disney Village — it will surely be the focal point from every angle, perfectly positioned to pick up shoppers passing by from every side.
And there we go — one of the doorways we’ll be walking into in around a year’s time, along with the three shop windows on this side of the building. The gently curved shape of the building can now be clearly seen, as well as how the entrance doors are positioned slightly further out from the main building, creating a porch area. The main entrance, with the huge globe appearing to float on its roof, will be on the right, where the walls again are stepped outwards in pure Art Deco style.
Presumably this means that, at some point over the next year, we’ll be saying goodbye to this portion of the Disney Village entrance arches, which now obscure the entrance of the store (and would certainly clash with its much subtler period style).
From this angle, we can see
the concept art really coming to life…
With
Disney Village currently being somewhat fenced off from the main resort hub (with its cheap street sellers and lack of Disney control), it will be interesting — and hopefully an improvement — to soon have the doors of the flagship store opening immediately out onto this area, perhaps making the walk between
Village and
Parks less like crossing a Frontier plain and more like a seamless Disney experience.
For angle angle, you only need to follow the passage behind the building. This is a public exit walkway from the Gaumont Cinemas complex on the left, an odd design that has meant the new store sits quite some way out from the ugly late 1990s grey façade of the multiplex next door…
The walls back here are some way shorter than the cinema on the left, but halfway along there is one interesting new detail…
…windows! Some had wondered if the offices and backrooms speculated to be built into the store would have any daylight and it appears they will at least have a modest amount, here. In fact, the positioning of the windows might possibly suggest a stairwell, as they are spaced at even intervals vertically.
Looking over the walls and through the tall opening (if not a window, an emergency exit?), you can see inside the future store. The first vertical support columns are now in place — for a roof, or for a first floor office/storeroom?
Around the side of Gaumont Cinemas, you can climb the exit stairs to get a great view over the whole area and what will one day (perhaps within the next 10 years) become the
second street of Disney Village, with more shops, restaurants and an additional entrance for the TGV platforms below…
A plot even remains between World of Disney and the IMAX, currently the only development to have made it from sketch to reality for this second street. With the superb view back across to Disneyland Hotel and Walt Disney Studios Park, this would make a great bar or café, especially over several floors…
This corner of the construction site has an odd arrangement of internal walls already in place, creating a small nook of a room right in the corner here and other spaces which look like Cast Member or backstage areas. Presumably this is where goods will be delivered, since access is so difficult elsewhere…
The new store will be set quite some way back from the esplanade.
Waiting at the side of the construction site were the next pre-fabricated walls to be lifted into place, including some more window pieces of the jigsaw.
You have to say it again: This building will really change the landscape at the heart of Disneyland Paris.
Above, more windows dotted about the back wall, confirming there will be a second floor here at least.
Now for the angle as you leave the parks. From Disneyland Park, the sunken Fantasia Gardens will lead upwards perfectly to World of Disney, like a beacon on the horizon…
Forget the Plaza East and West Boutiques under the wings of Disneyland Hotel for your last-minute souvenirs, World of Disney will be drawing in the crowds long after park closing.
Meanwhile, from Walt Disney Studios Park the store will thankfully block the grey hulk of the Gaumont once and for all. After seeing all the “magic of the movies” within the Studios, it was a shame to come out and see such an ugly real-life cinema. Now, with the Art Deco style of World of Disney looking like something right out of the Studios’ own Hollywood Boulevard, we’ll have a much nicer flow of theme from the exit of the park.
Finally, an all-new angle. The departure lounge on the first floor of the resort’s high speed rail station offers a great view over the whole resort hub, pointing directly out towards where that giant globe will soon sit atop World of Disney…
Perhaps when the store opens in around early 2012 (no confirmed details of any kind yet), this space will become a place to linger a while longer. Its warm colours and elaborate, architecturally-pleasing details should certainly bring a real touch of “magic” to the area at least…
Can you picture it already?
