Disneyland Paris Marvel: Super Heroes United live show to feature indoor drones: first details

Disneyland Paris has revealed the first artwork and technical details for Marvel: Super Heroes United, the live stage experience launching for Marvel Summer of Super Heroes and taking the place of CinéMagique. In a worldwide Disney Parks first, it’ll feature drones inside the theatre. With the performance space assuming the name Studio Theatre, it’ll only be once inside that the transformation from the former movie-celebration show will reveal itself into something totally new. The 400m² stage will combine with one of the biggest LED screens in Europe and a huge 1,000m² of projection space to fully envelop the audience in a show mixing live actors with state-of-the-art technical effects. Using projection surfaces mounted on the sides of the auditorium, the show will provide a 180° video experience brought to life by 30 projectors. Meanwhile, the drones in question will be used “beneath unbelievable aerial choreography for a truly spectacular show.” When the show was first announced last year, the production team teased “technology that wasn’t even available five years ago” — indoor drones would certainly tick that box. Marvel: Super Heroes United backstage facts in full
  • huge stage measuring over 400 m²
  • projection area measuring 1,000 m²
  • One of Europe’s largest LED screens
  • 180° video experience with over 30 video projectors
  • Special effects and scenic pyrotechnics
  • 80 light projectors and moving stage sets The Studio Theatre  at Walt Disney Studios Park has been completely reimagined to welcome this show and its cutting-edge technology
  • From initial studies to the end of construction, this project will involve almost 300 professionals.
  • During the season, the show will be performed up to 5 times per day.
The first piece of creative artwork for the show has also been released (top), showing Iron Man, Captain America, The Incredible Hulk, Doctor Strange, Black Widow, Spider-Man and Black Panther in one of several locations featured in the show. According to the press release, we’ll “travel with Doctor Strange to the ‘Sanctum Sanctorum,’ visit Dr. Abraham Erskine’s lab (creator of the Super Soldier Serum used by Steve Rogers aka Captain America), and even enter the sanctuary of the evil villain Thanos.”

Considering CinéMagique could play to the 1,100 seat theatre up to 8 times per day, the only downside to what looks set to be an epic, exclusive new attraction for Walt Disney Studios Park could be that there’ll only be 5 performances per day. The curtain-raise on the resort’s high profile Marvel summer season comes at the opening of a special exhibit taking place at Palais de Tokyo in Paris. Open to anyone who registers to visit for free (there are still places for this Wednesday 21st and Thursday 22nd March), the promotional event also includes a VR experience of the new show, a first-look at costumes and props to be used during the season and a preview of new exclusive Disneyland Paris Marvel merchandise.

Marvel Summer of Super Heroes begins 10th June 2018 with the launch of Marvel: Super Heroes United and two more entertainment events new to Disneyland Paris. Stark Expo presents: Energy for Tomorrow! will be a brand new stage show on the Production Courtyard stage used for Star Wars and Christmas shows, featuring Loki, Black Widow, Spider-Man and Tony Stark (Iron Man) himself. Coming from Disney California Adventure, Guardians of the Galaxy Awesome Dance Off will feature Peter Quill (Star Lord) and Gamora leading guests on a mission set to his favourite 70s and 80s playlist. The longstanding Spider-Man meet and greet will also make way for a Heroic Encounter with Captain America in Backlot. Guests will still be able to meet Spidey face-to-face, but only if they’ve booked the new Signature Marvel Package with their hotel. At this encounter, Spider-Man will wear a brand new Marvel Cinematic Universe costume for the first time, becoming his standard in-park look. If all that’s not enough Marvel for you, sit tight for 2020 onwards, when Walt Disney Studios Park begins unveiling a huge transformation of several existing attractions into a whole new Marvel land, part of the recently announced $2 billion expansion.
